Orpheus And Eurydice
This opera by German composer Christoph Willibald Gluck is based on the myth of Orpheus. Unable to accept the death of his beloved wife Eurydice and overcome with grief, he embarks on a journey to the underworld, where he tries to soften the spirits by his music. He persuades them to let Eurydice return with him on one condition: Orpheus must walk in front of her and not look back until they both have reached the earth again.
The year 2014 marks the 300th anniversary of Christoph Willibald Gluck’s birthday. His most popular opera Orpheus and Eurydice tells a timeless story about the power of love and our ability to change our faith by believing in our strengths and by daring to push and re-define boundaries.
