The Hackney Volpone

In a recut of Ben Jonson’s 17th century classic, NYLon Projects in partnership with The Mill Co. Project will bring to life one of the most significant comedies of the Jacobean era this summer, featuring some of the finest young theatre professionals alongside a host of people from the local community. With the aim of creating a vital, rigorous and relevant adaptation of the play, the company’s involvement with people from across the borough will see some members of the supporting cast taking to the stage for the first time, while the work itself continues the development of the Rose Lipman Building on the De Beauvoir Estate as a new theatrical venue, following the Royal Court’s staging of Circle, Mirror, Transformation and RETZ’s The Trial at the venue in 2013.

Loosely inspired by the traditional story of Reynard the Fox, the play follows the story of a con-trick that spirals out of control when Volpone, a Venetian gentleman, pretends to be on his deathbed, ably assisted by his parasite Mosca, in order to dupe Voltore, Corbaccio, Corvino and Lady Would-Be, four legacy hunters who aspire to inherit his fortune. Stripping the play of the Sir Politic Would-Be subplot, the production places pace and immediacy at the top of the agenda, aiming to produce the freshest possible reworking of the playwright’s finest work.

Suitable for ages 14+. Runs two hours (not including interval)
