The Cost Of Eggs

The Mosaic Rooms are pleased to present two play readings by emerging Arab playwrights in collaboration with Sandpit Productions’ Bulbul Playwriting Competitions. The Bulbul Playwriting Competition invites writers from around the world to submit short plays in response to a theme about the Arab world and it’s surrounding regions. The first reading in our series is ‘The Cost of Eggs’ by Yamina Bakiri.

Set in war torn Syria, The Cost of Eggs centres around a mother who painstakingly tries to hold her family together as the country falls apart. Her belief that her son is alive is the foundation of her integrity and resilience. The Cost of Eggs is about loss and belief, fear and hope, hard bread and broken dreams, values, closeness and isolation, willpower and its limits, trying and failing, suffering and choices. It is about the ordinary life and the extraordinary resilience of the Syrian people
