Understanding And Fighting Parkinson's Disease And Dementia

Researchers from the Institute of Neurology of UCL will talk about two neurodegenerative diseases, Parkinson’s disease and Frontotemporal Dementia. Dr Helene Plun-Favreau, member of UK Parkinson's Disease Consortium, will talk about her research into Parkinson’s disease and how genetic mutations linked to Parkinson’s disease might play a key role in the death of brain cells, potentially paving the way for the development of more effective drug treatments.

Dr. Selina Wray is interested in the molecular mechanisms underlying frontotemporal dementia (FTD), that is the 2nd most common cause of dementia after Alzheimer's Disease, and is caused by the death of cells in the brain. In order to understand why these cells die, and develop treatments to prevent this cell death, Dr. Wray takes skin cells from patients with genetic forms of FTD and converts them into stem cells.

Pint of Science is a non-profit organisation and all your ticket money will go towards future events.
