The Proposal / To Be A Wife

In response to the legislations allowing same-sex marriage in the UK and alongside the widely discussed discrimination of LGBT people in Russia, GOblin Baby Theatre are giving Anton Chekhov's one-act-classic ‘The Proposal' a new twist by turning it into a futuristic farce about same-sex marriage.

To complete their comedy-double-bill, they will also present a brand new play about same-sex marriage by Tilly Lunken called 'To Be a Wife'. Anton Chekhov’s freely adapteone-act-fararce The Proposal.

The Proposal:
In Russia 2114 Ivana has come to propose marriage to Stepan's daughter Natalya. However, she only gets into a succession of pointless arguments with Natalya, involving boundary disputes and dogs. Stepan's contributions to the flow of events are no help to the situation either; nor is Ivana's hypochondria. To make matters even more complicated, Ivana is a woman proposing to another woman!

To Be A Wife: In England 1814 Iris loves Bel but is married to Roddy. Then, in 1914 Bel marries Roddy but of course she loves Iris (really and truly)! And then in 2014, Bel loves Iris and can marry Iris and Iris loves Bel and can marry Bel and neither marries Roddy as he's most emphatically not in want of a wife!
