Amaka
A birth, a death, a chimpanzee.
“I don’t know what to tell you, mate. She turned into a chimpanzee and left.”
She was popular at school. She won Funniest in the Year. She was engaged to Robbie. They had a baby. All was well.
But when a split-second, throwaway decision smashes her life to pieces, can she ever stop being the funniest in the year?
Armed only with her sense of humour and an obsession with ‘closure’, she provokes bereavement counsellors, tussles with fortune tellers and smokes a couple of tribal pipes. Surely one of them will work? The books told her they would.
Written and performed by Lucy Thackeray, Amaka is a sharply comic, deeply moving and often ridiculous one woman play about that taboo we fear most, and how we look for the silver lining.
