Outsider: Robert Gordon McHarg III

R.G.McHarg III FRSA was born an outsider, a stuttering English Quebecker who moved to London in the early 80’s and never went to art school. McHarg’s first solo show was 25 years ago. Working in a variety of mediums his work is insightful, irreverent and humorous like the enormous wood cut outs “The Thing” and “St.George” a tribute to George Best, “HIM” a life size sculpture of Charles Saatchi, the Elvis Toilet, “Peace Off” lenticular artwork, Fuji Rocks, “Gonchans” inflatables and the “I shot Damien Hirst” portraits.

ART-TUBE 01 (2001). McHarg’s brainchild is London’s first and only art exhibition on a working tube train. The work of 42 artists who each produced specially commissioned panels which were exhibited on an entire London Underground Piccadilly Line train. Artists included: Yoko Ono, John Cooper Clarke, Gavin Turk, Jamie Reid , Vivienne Westwood, John Dunbar.

Art director /curator projects include THE ROCK & ROLL PUBLIC LIBRARY (2009-12)
BLACK MARKET CLASH exhibition and The Clash SOUND SYSTEM box set (2013).

McHarg opened the Subway Gallery in 2006 and has curated over 80 exhibitions there, working to achieve his goal of establishing the Joe Strummer Subway as an inspirational London art hub. The OUTSIDER exhibition celebrates all the above along with new works.
