Barnes Music Festival - Piano Recital
Marc Verter is one of the most exciting and versatile collaborative pianists of his generation performing regularly in the UK and internationally. In this lunchtime recital he plays a programme inspired by the 19th century Soirée Musicales.
Romantic works by Chopin, Schumann and Fauré convey fantasy and dream while allowing the imagination to run wild. Folk elements in Chopin’s Mazurkas are echoed later in the recital in Schumann’s Davidsbündlertänze (The League of David) whose first theme is based on a mazurka by Schumann’s fiancée Clara Wieck. This piece, possibly one of the greatest piano works in the 19th century, recalls the biblical Israelite King David and his battles against the Philistines. The League of David was a literary society in Schumann’s day which defended modern music. Marc also introduces a special work by Pamela Harrison Six Eclogues of Portugal.
