Pina Bausch: Auf Dem Gebirge Hat Man Ein Gescheri Gehort
Beginning her work as a choreographer in 1968, Pina Bausch is the inventor of tanztheater as it is known today. During 40 years as Artistic Director of Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, she nurtured an ensemble of vivid imagination and grand scale. Since her untimely death in 2009, the company has continued to tour her 46 choreographic works around the world.
For this visit, the company perform two pieces from the 1980s never before seen in the UK. The first, Auf dem Gebirge hat man ein Geschrei gehört (On the Mountain A Cry Was Heard) is an engrossing production, set upon a soil-strewn stage and featuring music from Billie Holiday, Edith Piaf and Henry Purcell. Gebirge touches upon common themes found in Bausch’s work: love, power, and the idiosyncratic nature of human relationships, creating a piece that is in turns sometimes delightful, and sometimes dark and powerful.
