Women have been pioneers in electronic music for as long as men, but they’ve been denied the same recognition throughout its history.

Pictured above, Daphne Oram (1925 – 2003) is one of the central figures in the development of British experimental electronic music. Oram is credited with the invention of a new form of sound synthesis – Oramics, one of the earliest forms of electronic sound synthesis.

In honour of Oram and women like her, East London Fawcett Society will on 4th November present an evening of live performances and talks, showcasing women in music. The event will be held at The Russet in Hackney, and will feature live performances and talks.

The event will include:

• Sonic explorations by Shiva Feshareki in collaboration with Ivor Novello-winning Sound Artist Simon Fisher Turner.

• Talks by:
o Dr Nina Power, Senior Lecturer in Philosophy at Roehampton University, and author of One Dimensional Woman.
o Frances Morgan, Deputy Editor of The Wire.

• A live set by leftfield Producer, Nik Colk Void - part of Factory Floor and Carter Tutti Void.

• An electronic music debut: a performance opportunity given to a selected young female musician under the age of 18.

And…

• A slightly experimental, super healthy dish that will bring music to your mouth, prepared by The Russet’s in-house chef - Kale and Avocado Salad with Lemon Tahini Dressing and Crushed Walnuts, £6.
