Everest '88 Reunion
The record-breaking 1988 ‘Neverest’ expedition team, which climbed Mount Everest by a new route without the aid of supplementary oxygen, will reunite for a special one-off event in support of a leading brain cancer charity.
Celebrating the 25th anniversary of the renowned ascent, it is the first time the whole team has been together since Stephen Venables became the first Briton to reach the summit without oxygen, setting a world record for a solo bivouac in the process.
The event, Everest 88, will raise money for the brain tumour charity Brainstrust, and will take place on 14th March 2013 at the Royal Geographical Society in London.
Stephen Venables, a patron of the charity, lost his son Ollie to a brain tumour aged 12. During an illustrated presentation followed by a Champagne reception and dinner, Venables and the team – which also includes Norbu Tenzing son of Tenzing Norgay who made the first successful ascent of Everest in 1953, will recount their inspirational stories of the pioneering ascent of the Kanshung Face, that culminated in Venables reaching the summit alone.
Tickets for the talk cost £20 and £125 for the Champagne reception and dinner. The event’s main sponsor is Rolex, plus Apter Development. Tickets are available from www.brainstrust.org.uk/everest88/ or by phoning 01983 292405.
