Building Drawings, Drawing Buildings: Lazar Khidekel, Suprematism And The Russian Avant-Garde

Pushkin House in partnership with the Lazar Khidekel Society, is exhibiting and discussing the work of the great avant-garde artist, architect, designer and theorist, Lazar Khidekel (1904-1986). Khidekel worked closely with Marc Chagall, El Lissitzky and Kazimir Malevich in Vitebsk in the years 1918-1922, where he became an important proponent and theorist of the Suprematist movement and a founding member of the UNOVIS Group (The Affirmers of New Art).

The exhibition focuses on early works by Khidekel from the golden age of Russian constructivism in the 1920s. It explores Khidekel's role in developing Malevich's system of Suprematism and his work and life during the early years of the Russian avant-garde. It displays 20 original drawings and 30 photographs and posters. The artworks, period photographs and posters from the Khidekel Family Archive in New York City are kindly lent by Mark and Dr Regina Khidekel.
