Expert Talk: Doctors, Dissection And Resurrection Men: Jelena Bekvalac, Natasha Powers, Louise Fowler

Why not complement your group's visit to the Doctors, Dissection And Resurrection Men exhibition with a special pre-exhibition talk? Choose from one of three experts who will each explore a different subject, from how the Museum’s skeletal remains were used to develop the exhibition to the archaeological challenges faced during excavations of the Royal London Hospital. Choose from one of the tours below (subject to availability).

People Of Our Past: Through The Skeletal Looking Glass
Duration 45 mins
Curation of the unique skeletal collections at the Museum of London provides a privileged opportunity to learn directly from past Londoner’s who have lived through momentous times in history. This talk will explore how as a curator we can share their life stories through osteological analysis, display and exhibitions. With exhibition curator and osteologist, Jelena Bekvalac.

“The Particulars…Will Excite The Greatest Disgust And Indignation”: Dissection And Autopsy At The London Hospital Medical School
Duration 45 mins
In 2006, archaeologists from Museum of London Archaeology (MOLA) discovered dissected human and animal remains in the grounds of the London Hospital. This talk will explain how the remains were analysed to provide information on the tools and techniques that were in use at the medical school, including cadaver sharing and comparative anatomy. With MOLA's Head of Osteology, Natasha Powers.

Digging Up The Dead
Duration 45 mins
Find out about the challenges faced by the Museum of London archaeologists who excavated the early 19th century burial ground at the Royal London Hospital. Learn who came to be buried there, and how the dissecting room of the medical college was supplied, ‘with as much secresy [sic] and delicacy as possible’. With Louise Fowler, Senior Archaeologist for Museum of London Archaeology.
