Stupid Cupid: The Girl Group Era
Put on your bubble skirt, come on down to the Lounge, and groove to the music that made the world fall in love.
During the 50s and 60s, America helped define a music that was highly criticized by its older generation. Springing from the blues, swing and other popular genres, it idealized the giddy, love-struck teenagers who danced to The Twist, The Stroll, The Swim, The Locomotion, The Mashed Potato and others.
Then came our British cousins with the “Invasion” that rocked the world, making rock ‘n roll the model for generations to come. This evening’s show represents the “Girl Groups” of the late 50s/early 60s and highlight songs sung by Connie Francis, Brenda Lee, Barbara Lewis, Lesley Gore, the Supremes and more – each singer unique in timbre and style.
