Musical Fireworks!
Rossini's 'Little Solemn Mass' is neither small nor solemn: the title was probably conceived by the witty Rossini to tease his audience. The work actually lasts for 90 lively and colourful minutes. Originally written for a group of twelve singers, 'men, women and castrati', this performance by the 150-strong voices of Lewisham Choral Society and soloists may sound a little different! This sparkling work has a real operatic feel, with glorious solos and exhilarating choruses. It has an irrepressible vitality and is a delight for performers and audience alike.
Lutoslawski's dazzling Variations on a Theme of Paganini for piano duet was written in wartime occupied Poland and performed in cafes around Warsaw by the composer and his friend Andrzey Panufnic as they tried to eke out a living.
