Modern Sacred Masterpieces
A concert showcasing some of the most beautiful sacred works in the contemporary repertoire by the British composer John Tavener, the Estonian Arvo Pärt and the Polish composer, Henryk Górecki.
The choir will perform two Tavener settings of William Blake, The Lamb and The Tyger, and his Song for Athene, written originally in memory of a friend and immortalised for many as the music played while Princess Diana’s cortege left Westminster Abbey.
The concert also features iconic works by Pärt – his settings of the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis, De Profundis and the Seven Magnificat Antiphons. Pärt's soundscape is haunting and ethereal. While often sounding plaintive, his music also conveys a sense of serene peace.
And finally, no concert of modern sacred music would be complete without Górecki’s little masterpiece, Totus Tuus.
