Maya Angelou’s Legacy: Alleviating Poverty Through Literacy

UK based non-profit Thank U is raising funds to create the first of three libraries in impoverished countries, named in memory of literary legend, Dr. Maya Angelou.

Thank U believes that literacy is a skill capable of opening doors for children in developing countries, by providing them with opportunities in life that they might not otherwise have ever had. Children who learn to read are more likely to continue their education, develop a career, earn a reasonable wage, and break free from the binds of poverty.

Dr. Maya Angelou inspired the world with the power of her words. She was a literary icon, a distinguished writer, poet, activist, film director, author, dancer, actress and singer. As an accomplished woman of great dignity and valour, Dr. Maya Angelou has been one of the most renowned and influential voices of our time. Her appeal to all generations is the reason she has been selected as the honouree for this ambitious project. Prior to her death, Dr. Angelou was made aware of this project and was honoured to have the literacy outreach project named in her honour.
