Spheres Of Influence
Suk - Serenade for Strings in E flat major Op. 6
Bach - Piano Concerto No.2 in E major BWV 1053
Bach - Piano Concerto No.4 in A major BWV 1055
Dvorák - Serenade for Strings in E major Op. 22
Prior to a 13-concert tour of the US, the Academy returns to Cadogan Hall with pianist Jeremy Denk. Jeremy is the winner of a 2013 MacArthur "genius" Fellowship, the 2014 Avery Fisher Prize and Musical America's 2014 Instrumentalist of the Year award. Central to this evening's concert are two Bach concertos originally composed for harpsichord, performed here on the piano. Book-ending these are two beautiful Serenades for Strings. Dvorak's, a much-loved Academy favourite, gave Suk the inspiration for his own Serenade. The connection between the two composers is also echoed by suggestions that Suk's work is a portrait of his wife Otylka, who was in fact Dvorak's daughter.
