Bowery Butterflies: Stories & Songs From 70's Underground
It seemed that in the 70’s the globes’ musical axis swung from London to New York. Lou Reed and Velvets taking the high road whilst embryonic punk and New wave (in the form of Blondie, The Ramones et al) was ruling the low road at CBGB’s. Against a backdrop of huge social, cultural and economic change contemporary music was finding its feet, its identity and sticking a cocaine dusted middle finger up against mainstream culture.
There was one person who seemed to be at all of these places – Sylvain Sylvain of the pioneering New York Dolls. Like Forrest Gump, he seemed to be in all the right places at all the right times. Hanging out with the main protagonists and being first on the list at the key happenings of the time (and often the first one thrown out). An irrepressible charmer with a million tales to tell of his part of that period in the big apple, such as, er…. sleeping with all of Blondie, being managed my Malcolm McLaren and how selling jeans to Janis Joplin created the New York Dolls.
This will be an evening of Sylvain telling the story of New York music, the whirlwind of excess and singing the songs that inspired and came from the city. The time, the stories and the period that defined Sex, Drugs and Rock and Roll.
