Henry James' The Portrait Of A Lady
The great critic F.R.Leavis called this one of the 'most brilliant novels in the language'. James was fascinated by what might happen to a really talented young American woman if she had money. Isabel Archer does not so much confront her destiny as affront it and the consequences of her bad choices are excruciating...but so beautifully explored.
The talk is followed by a screening of The Portrait of a Lady (1996, 139 mins, 15) at 2:00pm.
