Leeds International Concert Season 2012/13 - Mr Best Returns To Leeds Town Hall: A Lecture Recital In Costume
A programme of works comprising:
Handel Overture: The Occasional Oratorio
Lully Rigaudon de Louis XIV
D'Aquin Le Coucou
Berlioz L’Enfance du Christ: The Shepherds’ Farewell
Best March in D
Bellini Norma: Casta diva
Dubois Fiat lux
Professor Ian Tracey brings a unique tribute (in costume) to his great precursor as Organist of St George's Hall, Liverpool – W T Best. A native of Carlisle, Best hardly ever used his Christian names – William Thomas. The selection includes Best's own March in D and his arrangements from repertoire by Handel, Lully, D'Aquin, Berlioz and Bellini. The finale comprises Dubois’ Fiat lux inscribed to Best in his capacity as Organist to the University of Liverpool – Fiat lux is the University motto, and the music proceeds, magically, from darkness to blazing light.
