The Railway Children by D. Simpson and E. Nesbit
They lost their old life... and made a new one. The final play of the season is adapted by D. Simpson from E Nesbit’s classic, well-known story of the family thrown into poverty after their father is wrongly accused of spying and mysteriously taken away. Along with their mother, Roberta, Phyllis and Peter move to a cottage in Yorkshire where their lives revolve around the nearby railway.
Of course adventures ensue and a saviour comes to their rescue in the guise of a gentleman they have befriended on the train and all’s well that ends well.
Perhaps containing a little more social realism than the hugely popular film version starring Jenny Agutter and Bernard Cribbins, there is still enough heart-warming sentiment in it to send an audience home with a warm, seasonal glow inside.
