Programme to include:

Alexander Borodin – In the Steppes of Central Asia
Sergei Prokofiev - Violin Concerto No. 2
Sergei Rachmaninov – Symphony No. 1

Conductor - Robin Browning

Violin - Olivia Scheepers, Winner Hatfield & District Music Festival 2013.

This concert celebrates great Russian composers. Borodin’s short work ‘In the Steppes of Central Asia’ mixes oriental melody with Russian song. First conducted by Rimsky Korsakoff, it is dedicated to Franz Liszt. The orchestra will then be joined by the winner of the 2013 Hatfield and District Music Festival, Olivia Scheepers, to perform Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No.2.

The second half of the concert features Rachmaninov’s First Symphony from 1897 which was re-discovered after his death in 1943. It demonstrates the composer’s skill at re-theming his melodies to create a shadowy, mighty and yet joyous work.
