Programme to include:

Malcolm Arnold - Tam O’Shanter Overture
Peter Maxwell Davies - An Orkney Wedding, With Sunrise
Ralph Vaughan Williams – Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis
George Butterworth - The Banks of Green Willow
Edward Elgar - Enigma Variations

Conductor: Robin Browning

The de Havilland Philharmonic’s opening concert focuses on some of the greatest English composers. Two short, boisterous works by Malcolm Arnold and Peter Maxwell Davies are followed by Vaughan Williams’ beautifully crafted Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis.

George Butterworth, who was killed during the Battle of the Somme in 1916, left us with three beautiful orchestral works. His piece ‘The Banks of Green Willow’ is a miniature tone poem using English folk song and is scored for a small orchestra. The whole force of the de Havilland Philharmonic can then be heard in Elgar’s magnificent Enigma Variations; as famous for its secret dedications as for its glorious arching melodies.
