Between Heaven And Earth

Experimental abstracts by renowned Hull-based painter, Rob Moore

Rob Moore gave up his post as Dean of Hull School of Art and Design in 2012 to concentrate on his work as an artist... and appropriately this is one of three solo shows he is committed to this year. Rob describes himself as 'interested in abstraction' and his work process as being like the walks that inspire his imagery: "I set off, meander, halt, take a wrong turn and then reach the destination," he says.

A cynic might suggest he was being disingenuous... an active painter, drawer and printmaker, Rob is anything but an 'aeolian harp'. It's not just that he continues to run the Studio Eleven Gallery in Hull but also that his work is derived from sketchbooks that are studded with observations aimed at preserving ‘the sense of place’. Much of his work engages with cartography - which is surely the antithesis of abstraction. But of course it is precisely this tension that makes his (endlessly experimental) work so rewarding.
