Descarga Dance Traditional Afro-Cuban Dance (Rumba With Folklore)

Whilst all classes work on a drop-in basis, Descarga Dance do encourage you to take the 6 week block in order to develop your learning and get the most out of the course. They also recommend you book in advance where possible as classes get quite busy - partcularly the Rumba, Advanced Salsa Timba and Regueton classes.

Breaking down the movements and passes of Rumba - particularly Guaguanco, Yambu and Columbia – although we’ll also be taking your through a variety of African-derived dance styles that have informed salsa and contemporary dance. This will include the Palo, Pilon, Mozambique, Makuta, Bantu, the Conga, and elements from the Abakua, Arrara and Santeria ceremonial dances (Orishas).

Each class will focus on how you control your body (‘folklore movimiento’), Afro-Cuban styling and developing your understanding of the music - particularly how it underpins other forms of popular music. If you are looking for a traditional African dance class, want to delve into the history of Latin/Caribbean dance and have tons of fun, this is for you, whatever your level. Plus, anyone that has already attended our Rumba courses or specialist Afro-Cuban workshops will know how incredibly important these movements and musics are to Cuban popular music and Salsa dancing.

With Glasgow's only bonafide professional dancer and Afro-Cuban Specialist. Wear comfortable clothes, and flat, unclumpy shoes. Women are asked to bring either a flowing skirt or a scarf or something that could suffice if tied around/over your other clothes, and men a handkerchief. It is recommended that you try to make the full 6 week course in order to get the full benefit of the course, but classes do work on a drop in basis as well. NOT TO BE MISSED! You are strongly encouraged to book in advance as this is a very popular class.
