The Country Wife

Written in 1675, William Wycherly's subversive comedy of sex and seduction was so scandalous that it was banned for two hundred years.

The Country Wife is the quintessential Restoration Comedy, a bawdy romp full of sexually predatory men and socially restrained women trying to have as much pleasure as possible, while maintaining their façade of honour and decency.

When Margery, the country wife in question, is brought to town by her husband, Pinchwife, he attempts to keep her secreted in his house as far from the libidinous Horner as possible. But inevitably his attempts to conceal her results in a forbidden mutual attraction...

Director James Robert Carson updates the setting to modern day London, where games of gender politics, class divide and sexual repression are hilariously played out.
