Mackintosh Architecture

This major new exhibition will be the first substantive exhibition devoted to the architecture of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. It draws on the landmark research project led by The Hunterian, which will be launched in the summer of 2014 and will deliver the first in-depth survey of Mackintosh’s architecture.

The exhibition will challenge the familiar view of Mackintosh as the sole genius, by presenting the wider context of the practice of Honeyman, Keppie and Mackintosh; introducing the contractors, suppliers and clients, who supported the delivery of the buildings; and outlining the building process from initial planning permissions to final inspections.

The exhibition will have a particular focus on Mackintosh’s designs for dwelling houses. Over 80 architectural drawings, many never exhibited before, and drawn from collections across the UK, will be on view together with specially-commissioned film and models, archival material, and a supporting display of Mackintosh’s travel sketches.

Mackintosh Architecture will be accompanied by a wide-ranging events programme including a symposium, talks, and tours. It will subsequently tour to RIBA London and RIBA Liverpool in 2015.
