Gamelan Beginner Course

A chance to learn how to play the gamelan orchestra - an array of gongs, drums and metallophones which produce rich, sonorous and mesmerising sounds.

Playing the gamelan is both a rewarding musical and social activity. Classes can inspire self-confidence, improve co-ordination and listening skills, encourage team-building and be a great chance to try something new or develop your playing experience in a relaxed and friendly environment.

Tutored by Malcolm Milner, this class is designed for complete gamelan novices and beginners who have been playing for less than two years. No previous musical experience is necessary, just a willingness to sit on the floor, take off your shoes and have fun!

Southbank Centre's gamelan was presented as a gesture of friendship from the Government of the Republic of Indonesia to the people of Great Britain in 1987.

Founded by Alec Roth, Southbank Centre's Community Gamelan Programme offers a range of opportunities to try group music-making through taster sessions, workshops and regular classes.
