She Stoops To Conquer is one of the funniest plays in the English language. It was a massive hit when first performed in 1773 and a massive hit again for the National Theatre earlier this year. It's based on an incident in the life of author Oliver Goldsmith, who visited a private house, believing it was a hotel. The numerous 'mistakes of a night' involve a devious brother, a box of jewels, a shrewish wife, a shy young man and an heiress who pretends to be the maid ... until at last true love conquers all.
