Ely Consort perform Christmas Truce, a new oratorio by the composer Jonathan Rathbone & the local writer Graeme Curry, for choir, baritone & instrumental ensemble. It explores one of the most remarkable & poignant stories of the war - the spontaneous ceasefire at the trenches in France on Christmas Eve 1914. Christmas Truce draws on the writing of the soldiers who were there - from details of gifts exchanged, to accounts of joint burial services in no man's land. It includes settings of poems by Edward Thomas, who was killed in action at Arras in 1917, arrangements of the carols sung by the German & Allied soldiers to each other from their trenches, and a new version of the 23rd Psalm, sung in both English & German.
Fauré's Requiem, will be performed in the second half, one of the most sublime settings of the requiem mass. Pie Jesu will be sung by a member of Ely Cathedral Girls' Choir, with Dominic Sedgwick as baritone soloist, and former Cathedral assistant organist Jonathan Lilley.
