Scottish Art in Focus: Jacob More, 1740-1793
In the first of our series of lectures on Scottish artists at the National Galleries of Scotland, Dr Patricia Andrew examines the phenomenal career of Jacob More (1740-1793).
More initially worked as a painter of stage scenery in Edinburgh, then made his name with landscape painting. His celebrated series of The Falls of Clyde established his artistic reputation in both Scotland and London, where he moved in 1771. He then went to Rome c.1773 and settled there, becoming one of the central figures of the community of British artists in the city.
He enjoyed international acclaim as 'More of Rome' and continued to produce numerous landscape paintings, while diversifying into other areas such as garden design and art dealing.
