Tchaikovsky’s opera The Queen of Spades was completed in Florence in just 44 days.

It is based on a short novel of the same name by Alexander Pushkin with libretto written by Tchaikovsky’s brother Modest.

This is a truly Russian story in which a young penniless officer Herman tragically loses his integrity, his love and finally his mind to his obsession with gambling and his dream of winning a fortune.
