Cheltenham Concert Series
Schubert:
Overture, Rosamunde
Beethoven:
Symphony No.8 in F, Op.93
Brahms:
Piano Concert No.1 in D minor, Op.15
For their second visit of the series the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra begin gently with an overture which remains one of Schubert's best loved pieces. Beethoven's Eighth Symphony which follows is a delightful work, light-hearted but not lightweight. Both are conducted by the BSO's charismatic musical director, of whom The Guardian wrote:
"Karabits, a charmer, has that rare ability to be both fastidious and thrilling."
Brahms' masterly First piano Concerto is a more serious work. begun after the suicide attempt of his friend and mentor, Robert Schumann, it was orginally intended as a symphony, but instead it became a work in which piano and orchestra act as equal partners. Pail Lewis, the soloist, has already made his mark with his interpretations of Beethoven and Schubert.
"Time and again you marvel at the confidence and sureness of Lewis' playing combined with the finesse and musicality he has alway displayed." - Gramophone
