Our season begins with a programme in which we look eastwards to Hungary and Bohemia.
Brahms's Hungarian Dances, which are among his most accessible and popular works, were written in 1869. The pieces are based on well-known themes and imitate a 'gypsy band' style which was very popular in the mid to late 19th century. They present a charmingly relaxed and good-humoured side of Brahms's artistic character.
Smetana's 'From Bohemia's woods and fields', part of his marvellous set of Symphonic Poems entitled 'Ma Vlast' (My Country), is a glorious musical depiction of the Bohemian countryside. This will be the first time that the CRSO has performed this piece, and we are really looking forward to it!
Dvorak's cheerful and exuberant 8th Symphony, written in 1889, will end the concert in an uplifting manner.
