Dickens' Women

Entertaining, fascinating and challenging, Dickens' Women is the flagship international touring show for 'Dickens 2012', the celebration of the bicentennial of Charles Dickens' birth.

Dickens' personality transcends his books and the characters explored in Dickens' Women were chosen not only because they are some of the most colourful and entertaining characters in Dickens' writing, but because they were based on real people in his life; people he fought with and cared for, loved and hated.

'At his core he felt betrayed by the very women he most trusted... out of that hurt and sense of abandonment came vivid and crafted characters... again and again he returned to the depiction of women who led men on and them let them down... it's not a complete portrait of the female sex but it is a damning one’ (from Dickens' Women).

The play is as much about the man himself as it is about the twenty-three characters performed by Miriam Margolyes. These characters are drawn from his novels and sketches and include both the iconic and famous like Mrs Gamp and Miss Havisham and other, lesser-known creations from Dickens' books - but they all offer a unique glimpse into the real-life Charles Dickens.

Suitable for ages 12 and over.
