Artes Mundi 6 Exhibition And Prize
An exhibition and events programme featuring work by the internationally acclaimed shortlisted artists, including new works from Carlos Bunga, Theaster Gates, Renzo Martens, Sanja Ivekovi?, Karen Mirza & Brad Butler; UK premiers by Ragnar Kjartansson and Sharon Lockhart; a site specific work from Renata Lucas and a recent film from Omar Fast.
Artes Mundi 6 will feature a shortlist of globally recognised contemporary artists, united by their shared focus on the human condition and the transformative power of art within society, demonstrating to the wider international community that the whole of Britain is central in the support of progressive arts practice on both a local and global level.
The shortlisted artists for Artes Mundi 6:
CARLOS BUNGA (Portugal)
OMER FAST (Israel)
THEASTER GATES (USA)
SANJA IVEKOVI? (Croatia)
RAGNAR KJARTANSSON (Iceland)
SHARON LOCKHART (USA)
RENATA LUCAS (Brazil)
RENZO MARTENS (Netherlands)
KAREN MIRZA & BRAD BUTLER (UK)
This year’s shortlist was selected from over 800 nominations by Adam Budak, independent curator, and Sabine Schaschl, director of Museum Haus Konstruktiv.
The winner of Artes Mundi 6, who will be announced on 22nd January 2015 at National Museum Cardiff, will be awarded the generous sum of £40,000 confirming Artes Mundi as one of the largest contemporary art awards globally, and the UK‘s principal prize for international contemporary arts.
The work in Artes Mundi 6 responds to some of the most important and challenging events taking place in the world today, such as the Israel-Palestine conflict, the role and representation of women in Eastern Europe, immigration and socio-economic disparity, and the architectural structure of the world around us and its impact in our daily lives. As such it offers an international, innovative and socially transformative alternative to more established British arts event, such as the Turner Prize, which the contemporary art world and public have become disenfranchised with in recent years.
