Aomori Aomori
A performance by a company of dancers, musicians and a singer from Japan, Wales, UK and Europe.
Drawing on memory and the influence of environment and the everyday, Aomori Aomori is a performance work of dance, song and sounds arising from the arctic winters of North Japan; framing a work of emotive containment, where movement, voice, sound and silence become multidimensional. In repetition, movement assumes a sensibility of an internal landscape, reflecting the soul of Aomori; the silent repetition of snowfall.
A Tsugaru ‘hand dance’, a detail in focus, from vertical to horizontal, a choreographic process of translation and understanding, a gesture in repetition. A juxtaposition of organized systems, balanced on a fine line between order and chaos, being and nothingness, a transitional simplicity.
With Tsugaru teodori dancer Yoshiya Ishikawa, Tsugaru Shamisen — Hasegawa Sangen-kai, minyo singer Kiyoko Goto (who came to Chapter for the Aomori Project in 2011 and 2013) dancers Sioned Huws, Elena Jacinta, Agnese Lanza and Taz Burns. Aomori Project is an ongoing performance project that since 2008 has made connections across the Northeast coast of Japan and has toured to over twenty international venues and festivals in Europe, Japan and Singapore.
