The Ballad Of Martha Brown
1856. A story toils its way out of the deepest, darkest Dorset mud. A tale of jealousy and passion, an ordinary woman and her ordinary husband, a murder and a hanging. A crow caws, a horse is wrongly accused, a black silk dress comes to life and the mob at the hang-fair gawp in glee.
The audience is invited into a darkly humorous world where the events of Martha's life are played out under the constant stare of the gallows above.
Featuring cabaret music inspired by Kurt Weill, The Ballad of Martha Brown is presented in the company's rich visual style, blending storytelling and striking physicality, spliced through with wicked humour and macabre songs.
Angel Exit Theatre: "There is so much vivid theatricality and inventiveness at work here that I am already looking forward to its next show" - Lyn Gardner, The Guardian.
