Antigone
'What a person can do, a person ought to do'
Antigone, the daughter of Oedipus, defies the rule of law and buries the body of her brother. When brought to the King, her uncle Creon, Antigone refuses to compromise her principles in order to save her own life and the love of those around her. Based on Sophocles' tragedy, Jean Anouilh's 'Antigone' explores how powerful an individual's resistance can be in the face of state control; a theme as resonant today as it was to the original audience in Nazi controlled France during the Second World War. The production will be using the traditional Greek devices of choral speaking and theatrical masks to help to convey the play's powerful themes of love, loyalty, power and resistance.
