Shostakovich - Stephen Johnson Insight and Chamber Concert

Radio 3 host Stephen Johnson and English Piano Trio present a special talk and concert designed to provide further insight into the genius of Shostakovich.

Haunted and haunting, Shostakovich's Piano Trio No. 2 enshrines a private valediction and a public outrage at the discoveries as Nazi concentration camps yielded their appalling secrets – horrors undreamt of when, in 1934, against the backdrop of Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, he composed the long-limbed Cello Sonata that precedes it.
