Janacek's second quartet was written in the last year of his life and represents the culmination of his unrequited love for Kamila Stösslová. Haydn's Emperor Quartet was composed following a concert tour to London; so impressed by the effect of "God Save the King" the composer wanted to provide Austria with an equally moving anthem. Schubert's last completed quartet sits among the ranks of the truly great works in the genre.
