Sam Sweeney's Fiddle - Made In The Great War
World War One summoned to ferocious life through evocative, haunting folk storytelling.
In 2009 Sam Sweeney, fiddle player with the rabble-rousing folk big-band Bellowhead, bought a 1915 violin part-made by luthier and some-time music hall performer Richard Spencer Howard. Richard was conscripted and killed during World War One, and the instrument only finished nine decades later.
In a spellbinding performance which ebbs and flows between atmospheric traditional, regimental and music hall tunes and vivid storytelling, Sweeney, master storyteller Hugh Lupton, Bellowhead band mates Paul Sartin (fiddle) and Emma Thompson (lighting, projections), and acclaimed concertina player Rob Harbron (The Full English), capture the tragic story of the fiddle and its maker.
Sam Sweeney: "Brilliant." Mike Harding, BBC Radio 2.
'Hugh Lupton is a teller of great intensity and subtle power.' Sing Out Magazine.
There is a pre-concert talk with Sam Sweeney, on the story of the 1915 fiddle, at 6:30pm.
