Since becoming the Piano Winner of BBC Young Musician 2006, Cordelia Williams has continued to build an international career as one of the outstanding pianists of her generation. Schumann takes centre-stage in this programme and his Davidsbundlertanze was both an engagement gift to Clara Wieck and a statement of artistic activism. Schumann became part of an artistic group in the 1830s which had the aim of fighting against anything backward-looking or obsolete in the arts, and the characters depicted in these eighteen dances were imaginary members of this convention.
