Avant Garde Dance, Kokoro

Vesalii Icones is a fusion of dance and music, inspired by religious and anatomical imagery. It takes the Christian tradition of the 'Stations of the Cross' – ie a series of images depicting Jesus's betrayal, condemnation
and way to the cross – and combines them with 16th century anatomical drawings by Andreas Vesalius, the 'father of anatomy'.

The result is an experimental, expressionistic and edgy piece. Controversial when premiered over 40 years ago, the work retains all its impact and power to disturb and challenge.

In the first half of the evening, Kokoro musicians play instrumental works by Maxwell Davies, including three specially commissioned dance pieces performed by hip hop dancers from Bournemouth.
