Nadia Kisseleva: Document

Nadia Kisseleva’s Document is a series of portraits of people imprisoned during the Stalinist era in the former Soviet Union. Through her muted, monochrome palette, Kisseleva references the original black and white photographs upon which these paintings are based, and intimates at the abhorrent conditions suffered by detained people at this time. The scale of the persecution appears to be evident in these images, as does the indiscriminate nature of the Stalinist regime, through the faces of the men and women pictured. Held in the Terrace Gallery.
