Artist in Residence - False Starts
Yvonne Buchheim is a visual artist and founder of the Song Archive Project. The archive includes over 900 videos of amateur song performances from different countries and is the source for art works such as site-specific video installations, drawings and public events.
Since 2003 Yvonne has been approaching strangers in everyday situations and inviting them to sing a song of their choice in front of a video camera. Only about one in 15 agrees to participate.
In this initial research phase of Yvonne’s residency within the Psychology Department she has been investigating the fear of public singing that affects so many of us.
The residency aims to explore how self-expression can be encouraged and helps the reluctant singer to overcome doubt, shame and embarrassment.
This exhibition will give an insight into her work in progress to incorporate her findings into a live event titled How to Overcome Stage Fright in the spring.
