The evening’s programme includes Piano Quintet by Laurence Crane, a British composer whose work has been performed extensively in this country and Europe.
Either side of this are two pieces by Shostakovich; Romance from The Gadfly and Piano Quintet, the latter one of his chamber music masterpieces. Although first performed in the dark days of 1940, its five movements conjure an atmosphere that is playful, grave and serene.
