The Day After The Fair tells the story of a passionate, but illiterate young housemaid, Anna, in Victorian rural England. Seduced by a young London barrister she meets at a country fair, she longs to be able to communicate with her intended.

Anna’s elegant, sophisticated mistress, Edith, is trapped in a loveless, childless marriage to an autocratic businessman, Arthur, whose sister runs the household.

Anna persuades her mistress to ghost-write her love letters to the young man. But through their correspondence Edith herself falls in love with the barrister, while he believes the letter writer is the perky housemaid.
