Britten wrote his Variations and Fugue on a Theme of Henry Purcell as a way to introduce children to the instruments of the orchestra and the piece has become one of the most popular orchestral works of the 20th century, known primarily by its subtitle, The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra.
